5G service to be ‘basic infrastructure: Qualcomm
Qualcomm Inc. today launched the world’s first commercial 5G mobile platform, calling 5G the “basic infrastructure” for reshaping industrial applications and people’s daily lives. As the world’s largest mobile chip designer, Qualcomm also launched the long-awaited Snapdragon 855 platform, which fully supports 5G and AI features on devices. At the Snapdragon Technology Summit, Shanghai Daily learned that Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, HTC and Sony will adopt the technology as early as the first half of next year. Ericsson said “By 2026, 5G will create a market valued at US$1.3 trillion, bringing business opportunities to carriers and smartphone firms, as well as industries such as manufacturing, energy, public security and health care.”
Beginning in early 2019, 5G will become a business reality, launching mobile devices and networks in North America, Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia and China. The operators including AT& T, EE and Verizon, as well as infrastructure suppliers Ericsson and Samsung, also attended the summit and shared their vision on 5G.
Cristiano Amon, president of Qualcomm, said “5G is much bigger than 3G and 4G beyond smart-phone only,” and he called 5G the “basic infrastructure” for the next decade.
In China, 5G licenses are expected to be issued around 2019 and 2020, but 5G mobile phones have been issued by Lenovo and Xiaomi suppliers.
